Serabit el-Khadim

Site in the Sinai used as a quarry for turquoise beginning in the Middle Kingdom, largely replacing Wadi Maghara, and also the location of a temple dedicated to Hathor, lady of turquoise, where many texts dedicated by the leaders of mining expeditions have been found. The site was first excavated by Major Charles Macdonald in the 1860s, Flinders Petrie from 1904–1905, and a French expedition from 1993–1996.
